Marriage Devotional Day 40 - Submission to Christ Means that You Model Discipleship for Your Family
Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. Ephesians 5:21
There is a saying that goes, “Ministry starts in your home.” As fathers, our role is to disciple (lead others to follow Jesus deeper) our family. The key element to a disciple of Jesus is a submission to Him. If we are going to follow Jesus or encourage our families to follow Jesus, He must come before anything else.
Our goal is to listen to what we believe God is saying to us and respond in obedience. John 10 says, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” (John 10:27 NIV)
One of the elements to the life of a disciple of Jesus is one who is quick and willing to repent. “Repent” means to “change direction because of a change of heart or mind.” Mike Breen, who runs 3DM (3dmovements.com), talks about how the life of a disciple is like a stretched out slinky. It is a life that always needs to be turned back on course, or be adjusted to be more on course.
Mark 1 says, “After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. “The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!”” (Mark 1:14-15 NIV)
This good news that Jesus is Lord is calling us to believe this and live accordingly. In order for us to lead our family to follow Jesus, we need to be able to follow Jesus, and that means surrendering to a life of continued change under the rule of Jesus as Lord and King.
For her: What do you believe God is asking you to do? What are you going to do about it? Who are you going to discuss this with?
For him: What do you believe God is asking you to do? What are you going to do about it? Who are you going to discuss this with?
For us: What are some ways in which you can have a conversation with your children today in which you each share a time that you changed course because you felt God was leading you and you were submitted to Him?
