Marriage Devotional Day 33 - Legacy of Faith
“I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you.” Genesis 17:7
We see in the Bible that God called men to bring the legacy of faith and salvation to and then through their household. From Adam, we see through the line of Seth, people like Enoch who, “walked with God”. Through that same line we see Noah, who God brought salvation to. God told him in Genesis 6:18, “But I will establish my covenant with you, and you will enter the ark—you and your sons and your wife and your sons’ wives with you.” God used Noah to save his family and be the start of a new legacy of faith, and a whole new population of the earth.
God called Abraham out and gave him the promise that, “I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you.” (Genesis 17:7 NIV) Because our faith in the Bible tells us that we are children of this promise to Abraham.
So also Abraham “believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.” Understand, then, that those who have faith are children of Abraham. Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham: “All nations will be blessed through you.” So those who rely on faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith. (Galatians 3:6-9)
“Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may be by grace and may be guaranteed to all Abraham’s offspring—not only to those who are of the law but also to those who have the faith of Abraham. He is the father of us all. As it is written: “I have made you a father of many nations.” He is our father in the sight of God, in whom he believed—the God who gives life to the dead and calls into being things that were not.” (Romans 4:16-17 NIV)
By these men and their faith in God, we see an entire legacy of faith now offered to the entire world. God uses the faith of the head of the household (the men) to bring salvation to the family the family’s sphere of influence throughout the Bible.
For her: Who has God placed in your life that He wants you to be a representation of Jesus to? How can your husband support you? Share your thoughts with your husband.
For him: What type of legacy do you want to leave? What adjustments, if any, do you need to make to ensure your family is taught about Jesus and participates in a church community together?
For us: Together write a mission statement for your family. “Our family exists to…” (Finish the sentence together).
